BACKGROUND STORY

Founded in 2004, Dream Children’s Home was born out of compassion, personal conviction, and a deep desire to restore hope to vulnerable children. What began as a simple act of opening a family home to orphaned children has grown into a long-standing child protection and community support initiative serving vulnerable children and families in Kenya.

This vision  was inspired by the life experiences of its founder, Mrs. Rachel Gichia, who grew up in challenging circumstances and witnessed firsthand the suffering of children abandoned through poverty, neglect, and the loss of parents. From a young age, she carried a strong conviction that no child should suffer without care, protection, or a place to belong.

After getting married in 1988, and during a period when the HIV/AIDS pandemic had left many children orphaned across the country, the burden to support vulnerable children grew even stronger. In December 2004, Mrs. Gichia and her husband welcomed their first orphaned child into their home — a four-year-old girl from their church whose parents had both passed away and who had no relatives willing to care for her.

Shortly afterward, in January 2005, Mrs. Gichia learned through a television news report about four children who had been abandoned after the death of their parents. Deeply moved by their situation, she travelled to Mwiki, met the children and their grandmother, and eventually brought the children into her home. This marked the beginning of a growing mission to provide care, protection, and hope to orphaned and vulnerable children.

In February 2005, after approaching the Ministry of Social Services to formally express her desire to support vulnerable children, the initiative was registered as a charitable children’s institution under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Over the years, Dream Project Kenya continued to receive children referred by communities, local authorities, and child protection offices.

From its humble beginnings within a family home between Ngong and Matasia, the organization grew to support more than 180 children, providing shelter, education, care, protection, and a sense of belonging to children who had nowhere else to turn.

For more than two decades, Dream Project Kenya has remained committed to protecting vulnerable children and restoring dignity to families and communities through compassionate and practical support systems.
