Thank you for choosing to be a Volunteer to our amazing home!

Dream Children’s Home is strategically located between Ngong and Matasia in a peaceful and accessible environment that supports both community living and volunteer engagement. Ngong town is approximately 10 minutes away by public transport, with convenient connections to Nairobi and other surrounding areas.

The nearby towns provide access to essential amenities and services, including hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets, restaurants, and shopping facilities. In addition, the immediate neighborhood surrounding the home offers convenient access to smaller retail shops, pharmacies, and water refill stations for everyday needs.

The home continues to host local and international volunteers who contribute to child care, education support, mentorship, and community activities. To enable meaningful engagement and smoother adaptation to the environment, the organization generally recommends a minimum volunteer stay of three months.

Beyond the volunteer experience, Kenya offers rich cultural, environmental, and tourism opportunities, allowing visitors to experience the country’s diverse landscapes, wildlife, and communities during their stay.

Duties and Roles for the Volunteers

Helping children brush their teeth every evening (for those staying at the home).
Using creative games, music, and other activities to stimulate learning and help build the children’s self-esteem, confidence, self-discipline, organizational skills, and sense of responsibility.
Supporting resource mobilization efforts to help the home raise funds. We rely on donations from organizations and well-wishers to support various needs and projects such as food, swings for the school, stationery, uniforms, shoes, utensils, and farming activities.
Writing letters to local and international organizations requesting support for food and other essential needs.
Drawing and preparing educational charts for use in the school.
Assisting with school programs such as computer classes, under the guidance of a teacher.
Providing children with basic life skills to broaden their understanding of life and build self-awareness. Although language may sometimes be a barrier, we believe meaningful engagement is still possible.
Helping sort and arrange clothes in the boys’ and girls’ stores.
Assisting with polishing school shoes.
Sorting cereals and other food supplies.
Helping children learn how to make good decisions and communicate effectively.
Assisting with hanging clothes every Monday morning and Friday afternoon.
Arranging and sorting books in the school library, assisting younger children with reading storybooks, and helping issue books.
Performing any other duties that may be assigned by the management.
Personal ideas and initiatives are always welcome.

Rules and Regulations for the Volunteers.

Our services to these children demand that we work within the government guidelines and regulations of Child Protection and Safety. Therefore, volunteers MUST abide by the following rules and regulations for the BEST INTEREST of the children:

All volunteers MUST sign a volunteers agreement form with the director of the home.
No volunteer should use inappropriate language to the children or staff working at Destitute Children Centre.
Volunteer should always avoid any form of inappropriate touching of children. (NB. Some touching may be culturally construed to be inappropriate)
Volunteers dressing code while interacting with the children should be modest and respecting the culture of the centre (no shorts, exept they reach the knees).
No volunteer should smoke cigars/cigarettes in the presence of the children or come to the centre while under the influence of alcohol.
Volunteers should not develop “favourite” or “special” relationship with individual children as this will always work against our policy on equality and fairness for every child.
Volunteers willing to make cash donation or in kind for a particular child must do so in consultation with the director, social worker.
Volunteers willing to adopt or foster a child of Destined are welcome BUT must follow the government rules on international adoption or foster care.
Volunteers rooms should always be locked and children are NOT ALLOWED TO ENTER for respect purposes.
Volunteers are not allowed to give money to any child as this will develop indiscipine, nor buy them items like mobile phones, radios , these gadgets will distract the children from studing.
Volunteers are not allowed to give the children their mobile phones as they will use them unwisely or even loose them.
Male volunteers are NOT ALLOWED in the girls domitory and vice versa.
Volunteers are not supposed to take children to their private houses for those who reside in dream home. For that is their private house and for respect purposes.
Love relationship is NOT ALLOWED with the children who RESIDE AT THE CENTRE.
If a child is to be taken to the hospital by any volunteer the child MUST BE IN COMPLETE SCHOOL UNIFORM INCLUDING WEEKDAYS.
Volunteers are NOT ALLOWED to go outside the gate with any child without permission of the director or social worker.
Anytime a volunteer wants to take the children to a public place or event a staff member MUST accompany them.
We recommend the volunteers who reside outside dream to get rental houses in Ngong town for security purpose.
No jewelery should be given to any child or no permanent mark should be drawn on their bodies, as this is against the home rules and regulations\ilegal.
No child is supposed to borrow you ANYTHING e.g. money ,lotion, phones, spray.
